Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
