Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
