Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
