The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
