RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
